All project members will be accompanied by a Care for Life staff member in the villages. Transportation and scheduling will be arranged by a Team Supervisor. Other cultural activities beside the project will be included in the expedition. Unfortunately, there are no paid internships.

 

 

Most projects are available from May–August. Some projects can be completed other times of the year. Our Volunteer Director will coordinate all projects and timelines.

WEIGH AND MEASURE CHILDREN – ages 0-4 yrs 2-4 weeks 1 Project Leader; 1 Project Assistant (Portuguese language helpful – translator can be provided) Under the direction of Care for Life staff, weigh and measure children ages 0-4 years old in all villages that have just recently started with Care for Life. Follow-up on the children that have been previously weighed and measured in villages that have been part of Care for Life for some time.

SKILL SET: Health/medical background. Knowledge of how to set up and work a spreadsheet.

MATERIALS NEEDED: Scale and tape measure – provided by Care for Life. Bring your own Laptop.

PRE-EXPEDITION REQUIREMENTS: At the orientation (prior to departure) you will learn the correct way to weigh and measure children. In preparation for your trip you are required to become familiar with project documentation done four years ago.

JOURNALISM & PHOTOGRAPHY 2-3 weeks 1 Project Leader; 1 Project Assistant (One member of the team
must be fluent in Portuguese)
Care for Life needs to have a record of life stories of families in the villages. Though each family is tracked based on their progress throughout the program, there are valuable stories about each family that have not yet been discovered. Each team will need to record and write stories of at least 10 families and accompany each story with multiple pictures. Future teams will follow up on these families and collect stories of new families.

SKILL SET: Journalism and photography skills.

MATERIALS NEEDED: SLR digital camera and laptop.

PRE-EXPEDITION REQUIREMENTS: Orientation (prior to departure). Work with Care for Life staff for guidance on stories (initial contact will be arranged) and pictures needed.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING TO COMMUNITY LEADERS AND CARE FOR LIFE STAFF (using a social/cultural context). STUDIES ON COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION AND OWNERSHIP. 4 weeks 1 Project Leader; 1 Project Assistant (One member of the team must be fluent in Portuguese) Train village leaders and Care for Life staff members on leadership skills using the Care for Life developed curriculum.
SKILL SET: Experience and/or interest in communication, social work, community mobilization, participatory methods, or any other related area; good oral and written communication in English and Portuguese.

MATERIALS NEEDED: Your own laptop.

PRE-EXPEDITION REQUIREMENTS: Orientation (prior to departure), Be trained on curriculum by Care for Life staff member.

PRE-NATAL EDUCATION 2-4 weeks 1 Project Leader; 1 Project Assistant (One member of the team must be fluent in Portuguese) Teach pregnant women in the village how to take care of themselves with proper nutrition, sleep, etc…
SKILL SET: Medical or Health background.

MATERIALS NEEDED: Under the direction of Dr. English – Care for Life’s traveling physician – Will need to develop curriculum/lesson(s).

PRE-EXPEDITION REQUIREMENTS: Orientation (prior to departure). Develop curriculum/lesson(s) – under the direction of Dr. English.

INFANT AND UNDER FIVE MORTALITY RATE STUDY 3-4 weeks 1 Project Leader Gather data and complete an Infant and Child Mortality Rate
Study in Care for Life villages.
SKILL SET: Must speak Portuguese, with skills on research and data gathering/analyses and if possible with Medical or Health background.

MATERIALS NEEDED: Laptop.

PRE-EXPEDITION REQUIREMENTS: Present to Care for Life Director an implementation plan with an explanation about the methodology that will be utilized in the research.

FAMILY PHOTOS FOR DATABASE and FAMILY SPENDING SURVEY 2-3 weeks 1 Project Leader (Portuguese language helpful – translator can be provided) Take pictures of each family in all Care for Life villages and post in database. Along with taking the pictures, administer a Family Spending Survey, which measures the cost of food, rent, clothing, education, fuel etc. for the two weeks to determine the expenditure a family has on a regular basis.
SKILL SET: Computer and photography skills.

MATERIALS NEEDED: Laptop and digital camera.

PRE-EXPEDITION REQUIREMENTS: Orientation (prior to departure), training from Care for Life staff member.

MEDICAL TEAMS 1-4 weeks 1 Project Leader;1 Project Assistant (Portuguese language helpful – translator can be provided) Teach village members basic health, nutrition, disease prevention, dental hygiene, vision screenings, etc. Treatment of villagers is not allowed by the Ministry of Health unless the medical professional is previously approved to practice in Mozambique.
SKILL SET: Health/Medical background and knowledge.

MATERIALS NEEDED: Health/Nutrition booklet (provided), screening materials (provided).

PRE-EXPEDITION REQUIREMENTS: Orientation (prior to departure), training by Care for Life staff member.

STUDY OF GENDER INEQUALITY, ROLE OF WOMEN, BEHAVIOR CHANGE. 8 weeks 1 Project Leader; 1 Project Assistant (One member of the team must be fluent in Portuguese) Academic research project on key areas of women and family life using participatory research methods. These key areas include: Women: physical and emotional abuse, access to resources, access to education and health, economic development, decision-making power, and the reconciliation of work and family responsibilities.
SKILL SET: Experience or interest in communication, social work, community mobilization, participatory methods, and/or any other related area; good oral and written communication in English and Portuguese.

MATERIALS NEEDED: Laptop.

PRE-EXPEDITION REQUIREMENTS: Supervision and orientation from a university professor or other research institution. Orientation prior to departure.

CONSTRUCTION – EDUCATION AND TRAINING 2-4 weeks 1 Project Leader; 1 Project Assistant (Portuguese language helpful – translator can be provided) Use the Care for Life Construction Booklet to teach brick making, proper construction of a latrine, bathhouse, and home.
SKILL SET: Construction experience and knowledge.

MATERIALS NEEDED: All materials provided.

PRE-EXPEDITION REQUIREMENTS: This project can be two fold: 1) create the booklet to be used in Mozambique 2) teach families in Mozambique from the booklet. Orientation (prior to departure)

MUSIC / ART / DRAMA EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN AGES 8-14 2-4 weeks (One member of the team must be fluent in Portuguese) Work with the Children’s Club promoters and the children in the village Children’s Clubs, exposing them to different art media, for example: plays, music, and visual arts to reinforce lessons.

1. An art teacher or artist would bring paper and chalk, pencils or paint and help the children experience different forms of art by teaching them the techniques for drawing and/or painting.

2. A music teacher or music major would work with the children teaching them about music and maybe introduce them to musical instruments they have not yet experienced. They could also add some songs to the Children’s Club curriculum.

3. Drama teacher or drama major could work with the promoters and children teaching about drama and helping them create skits using important lessons that fit with the Children’s club curriculum.

SKILL SET: Professional or Educational Major in one of the arts listed above (Art, music, drama).

MATERIALS NEEDED: To be determined by project plan.
